Following the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday (February 9, 2025), President’s Rule was imposed in the state of Manipur on Thursday evening 13-Feb-25.
Preliminary talks took place at the center on February 13th, 2025. High-level review meeting on the Manipur security situation in New Delhi on March 1, Home Minister Amit Shah issued a directive mandating that the free movement of people be ensured on all roads in Manipur starting March 8. He also instructed authorities to take strict action against anyone attempting to obstruct movement on the roads. Mr. Shah had earlier chaired a high-level review meeting on the security situation in the conflict-hit state. The meeting, held in Delhi, focused on restoring normalcy in the northeastern state, which has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023.
This was the first review meeting held since the imposition of President's Rule in the state. Manipur has witnessed widespread violence for nearly two years, with over 200 people killed in clashes and 60,000 people displaced.
The date by which illegal weapons should be surrendered to police was set to March 6th, 2025.
Free Movement was implemented with security escort vehicles on March 9, 2025
1 protester killed and several injured, many security personnel were also injured, Kuki tribes protested against centers move after center imposed “free movement”. Police reported armed miscreants open fired. Large rocks were pelted at state buses and on the roads, security forces vehicles were also damaged. Police had to use tear gas to disperse protesters.
27 security forces personnel suffered injury including 2 Security forces personnel are critically injured. Security force showed tremendous restraint while trying to control the unruly and violent mob and used minimum force to control and counter the antisocial elements including the firing by armed miscreants from among the protesters. During the skirmish 16 protesters were reportedly injured and one protester succumbed to death two vehicles of the security forces were also burned by the protesters according to Manipur Police.
Newly formed Kuki-Zo Council - The free movement initiative of the government will be staunchly opposed until a political solution for the cookies or community is reached for lasting peace in the region the cookies or community cannot guarantee free movement of Meiteis across buffer zones and cannot take responsibility for any untoward incidents .
